Teaching Philosophy

My main objectives are to facilitate an enjoyment of music and teach students the fundamentals of a good music education, which includes proper technique, music theory, music history, and exposure to various repertoires. I also hope to foster critical thinking, develop learning skills that can be applied to other aspects of life and facilitate a life-long love of music.

I plan to achieve these objectives in a student centered learning environment, meeting the needs of the individual and providing a balanced, comprehensive and sequential program that implements elements of the Kodaly method. Through encouragement and positive reinforcement students will feel confident in performing, creating and responding to music.

Having the opportunity to show students how much fun playing the piano or singing can be is a great joy for me. I love to witness their progress, share in the excitement of mastering each work and see the pleasure they get from knowing they just created something beautiful. Listening to other performing artists can be a wonderful experience, but actually creating the music and beautiful sounds yourself is rewarding in countless other ways! I firmly believe that we are all musical and it does not take “talent” to play the piano or sing a song. Daily practice, a little bit of sensitivity and a positive attitude will result in achieving the primary goal of it all, enjoyment.
